Boasting a stunning 18-hole championship course designed by the ace Australian architect, Ross Watson, Kota Permai is indeed a serene and beautiful place despite its location in the middle of one of the Klang Valley's model property developments - the award-winning Kota Kemuning township. Developed by Hicom-Gamuda, the 1,820-acre township has set new standards for suburban living with its superb infrastructure, excellent landscaping and first-rate implementation. Kota Permai serves as a lush, green centrepiece for the township and, indeed, the club was designed to be very much a part of local community life.
Since its opening in March 1998, Kota Permai has captured the hearts and imagination of the Malaysian golfing fraternity. Watson's intelligent design is challenging yet fair, with playing options for all levels of golfers. The layout features a tantalizing mix of straight holes and doglegs, while scenic water hazards and sculptured bunkering add form and challenge to play. To ensure that a round of golf at Kota Permai is always a rewarding experience, the lush Zoysia fairways and undulating Tifdwarf greens are always maintained to the highest standards.
The design and construction also reflect a desire to be 'one' with nature, and this is reflected in the wildlife that inhabit the waterways and mature trees.
Bearing testimony to Kota Permai's status as one of the great courses of Asia is its impressive portfolio of international championships. In 1998, even before the club could organize its first monthly medal, it was chosen as the venue for the Volvo Masters of Malaysia. The success of the tournament prompted the title sponsors, Volvo, to make Kota Permai the 'home' of the Volvo Masters of Malaysia for the next three years.
In 2002, the tournament was upgraded to the Volvo Masters of Asia, the season-ending event on the Asian Tour, but the venue remained the same - Kota Permai. Korean American Kevin Na, who now plays on the PGA Tour, won the inaugural event. After a year's absence, when the tournament was played in Thailand, the Volvo Masters of Asia returned to Kota Permai in 2004. It was indeed a memorable return, with the popular Indian star Jyoti Randhawa beating Australian Terry Pilkadaris with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
Kota Permai hosted the inaugural Asian Nations Cup in 1999, which was the qualifying event for the prestigious World Cup of Golf. The World Cup qualifier returned to Kota Permai in the last three years, most recently as the 2008 Fortis International Challenge won by the Korean duo of Bae Sang-moon and Kim Hyung-tae.
And, of course, there's the jewel in the crown - from March 6-9, 2008, Kota Permai provided a worthy battleground for the best golfers of the Asian and European Tours in the US$2 million Maybank Malaysian Open. It was yet another superb showcase of top-class golf at Kota Permai, with India's Arjun Atwal edging 2007 champion Peter Hedblom of Sweden on the second hole of sudden death. Many golf pundits have rated the 2008 national Open as the best ever, with a lot of the credit going to the hard work and perseverance of Kota Permai's staff and members.
Over the years the owner of the club, Danau Permai Resort Berhad, has invested a great deal of money into making a good product even better. The most extensive renovation exercise took place in 2004-2005 when all the greens were rebuilt to United States Golf Associations (USGA) specifications and other parts of the course upgraded. In preparation for the Maybank Malaysian Open, the club again invested in upgrading the course, most notably in returfing the black tees and using the latest 'bunker fabric' technology to create vertical sides on the bunkers.
The Kota Permai clubhouse was a superb facility from day one but that did not stop the club from embarking on a massive clubhouse expansion exercise in early 2005. By the time the RM13 million project was completed, the clubhouse more than doubled in size and has an enviable range of facilities. Today, members enjoy two swimming pools including an Olympic-sized pool, floodlit tennis courts, squash courts, an eight-court-badminton hall, seminar facilities, ballroom, gymnasium and health centre. The two-tier practice range was also extensively renovated and also boasts excellent practice greens for chipping, putting and bunker play, plus a golf academy with state-of-the-art instructional technology.
With success comes recognition and, over the years, Kota Permai has earned numerous awards. The club was voted Malaysia's Number One Golf Course and Most Beautiful Hole (for Hole 2, par 4) by Golf Malaysia magazine in its readers' poll 2001/2002. Two years later, Kota Permai was voted as Malaysia's 2nd Best Golf Course in the same magazine's readers' poll for 2003/2004. History repeated itself when Kota Permai was once voted again the country's Best Golf Course, along with the Most Memorable Golf Course, Most Scenic Hole (for Hole No. 2 again) and 3rd Best Maintained Golf Course by Golf Malaysia magazine in its readers' poll 2005/2006. And it did not stop there - in Golf Malaysia magazine's readers' poll 2007/2008, Kota Permai was voted the country's Best Golf Course for the third time and, for the first time, the Best Maintained Golf Course.
In 2008, Kota Permai was named as the Best Golf & Country Club of the Year in the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2007/2008.
In addition to the above, Kota Permai was also adjudged as the winner of the Best Entrepreneur Award during the Gamuda 25th Anniversary Celebration in 2001. In July 2002, Kota Permai achieved yet another historic milestone by winning a prestigious international business award in recognition of the club's commitment to quality, leadership, technology and innovation - the American Business Initiative Directions' (BID) Quality Summit International Award in the Gold Category, presented in New York. Kota Permai was the only Malaysian business entity amongst the 64 countries present at the New York convention.
Today, Kota Permai continues to raise the bar for the Malaysian golf course industry as it forges ahead with unwavering commitment in its quest to become an icon of Asian golf. |
